WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police in Winston-Salem were on a high-speed chase overnight.

Officers heard several gunshots near 30th Street and North Patterson Avenue. A car drove away from the area.

When police attempted to stop the car near Shattalon Drive and University Parkway, the suspect rammed two police cars and fled on Shattalon Drive. Officers identified the driver as 16-year-old Axel Danielo Vasquez.

The pursuit ended when Vasquez lost control of the car and crashed into a telephone pole at North Liberty Street and East 28th Street.

Vazquez fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. Police said they found a firearm on the road he took as he fled.

The car caught fire after colliding with the telephone pole. The police officers who arrived at the scene removed a minor passenger from the vehicle.

The young man was taken to hospital. Police said the young man had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The youth has not been charged at this time, according to police.

The Winston-Salem Fire Department extinguished the car fire. Police said they found no casualties or property damage in the area.

Authorities charged Vazquez with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a public servant, a felony, fleeing to elude arrest and additional charges pending a $50,000 secured bond.

Police said Vazquez was charged as an adult under the Age-Up Act.
