An Arizona woman was found dead just before graduating from a master’s program in what police believe was a murder-suicide involving her ex-boyfriend, on PEOPLE.
The body of the 24-year-old Monet Newton was found fatally shot last week in an apartment in Glendale, Arizona. Police also found the body of 22-year-old Chase Cooper shot to death inside the residence.
“Initial information leads investigators to believe this is a murder-suicide committed by Chase Cooper,” police said in a statement.
According to police, members of Netton’s family found her body after flying in for her graduation.
“Monet’s family expected her to pick them up at the airport, but when Monet did not show up, her family became concerned,” police said. “Monet’s family and friends were unable to reach her, so they went to her apartment.”
“This family was getting ready to celebrate something so special, something she worked so hard for, and the celebration immediately turned into tragedy.” Jose Santiago Glendale police added.
Police said Newton and Cooper had recently ended a brief romantic relationship.
According to LinkedIn, Newton completed his master’s degree at Grand Canyon University, where he studied industrial psychology. The investigation into the suspected murder-suicide is ongoing.
