Wisconsin tribes urge members to take precautions in the case of ice stops – Wxpr

Lac du Flambeau’s tribal council announced on January 30th^th that there were no reports of incidents related to immigration and the application of customs in her reserve.

However, the tribal council calls on the members of the tribe to take precautions.

“I think it was a really huge week last week and just so many different rumors and things like that,” said Arai Brandvev, director of tribal ties to Lac du Flambeau tribal ties. “That [the announcement] It was a way not only to reassure our members, saying, “Hey, there are no incidents, but let’s just stay cautious.”

Ice concerns stem from reports in the southwestern part of indigenous Americans occurring with ice officials.

In a letter to President Trump, Democrats of US MPs from Arizona, New Mexico and California called for ice “to stop harassing indigenous Americans and to disrupt tribal sovereignty.”

“Anyone who reads the news knows that our relatives in the south are really dealing with this issue a lot,” Bradlev said. “It was just a way to assure our members that we stay on top of everything and stand up for their safety.”

Lac du Flambeau encourages tribal members:

• They carry multiple forms of identification.
• They know their rights.
• Report suspicious activity to tribal police

Breedlove says that to be detained is a worse scenario: “We prefer to be safe than to regret it.”

Other tribal nations in Wisconsin share similar messages with their tribal members.

The tribal council of Stockbridge-Munsee has released a press message asking all members of the tribe to prepare for the possibility of stopping questions. Like Lac Du Flambeau, Stockbridge-Munsee encourages tribal members to keep a tribal, state or federal ID card at any time.

Ho-Chunk Nation is abandoning the tribal IDs for tribal members and is looking for the creation of a program for the restoration of tribes who receive a passport, citing it as the most valid form of the true form of the ID and the United States.
