Winston-Salem warns of heavy traffic in the vicinity

NASCAR’s Feb. 1-2 weekend clash will bring plenty of big-name drivers to the track at Bowman Gray Stadium, but it’s the off-track driving that has Winston-Salem issuing a traffic advisory for the big weekend.

Residents and motorists should expect heavy vehicle traffic and a large number of pedestrians in the Bowman Gray Stadium area this weekend, police said.

And temporary road closures will be in place from 8am to 11.30pm on 1 February (Saturday) and from midday to 11.30pm on 2 February:

*Argonne Boulevard at Calvert Drive and at S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be open to NASCAR traffic only. Police said residents affected by the closure can access Reynolds Park Road, take Peachtree Street north, or drive south on Argonne to get to Waughon Street.

*Williamson Street on S. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Timlick Avenue and Diggs Boulevard at Bruce Street will be open only to motorists with prepaid parking in the West Lot. Residents affected by the closure should drive south on Diggs to get to Vargrave Street, US 52 or Waugewn Street.

All on-site parking for the event is for pre-paid access only, the city said. Race fans who do not have prepaid parking will need to park in either the innovative quarter lots off Research Parkway near US 52 or the Allegacy Stadium parking lots off Deacon Boulevard.

At both lots, buses will take race fans directly to the front of Bowman Gray Stadium and back to their lots.

City officials said anyone traveling through the area during the event but not attending should plan ahead and consider alternate routes to avoid getting caught in racing traffic.

The city said people parking illegally can find their vehicles towed.
