Winston -Salem Schools open doors for transparency, focus on safety – WXLV

Winston-Salem, NC-Winston-Salem School Council of Forsyte offers the community a look at the internal work of its schools through the “See for yourself” tours of Superintendent. Superintendent TRICIA MCMANUS emphasized the importance of first -hand observation in the assessment of school improvements.

“Do we make improvements in our schools? I could look at paper and understand this, but the best way is to enter the classrooms,” McManus said.

Tours, including a recent Glenni High School, seek to increase safety by providing parents with an internal view of school operations. McManus explained: “What actually happens in schools, so that’s why I wanted community members to enter and actually see themselves.”

The Gleni High School gained attention last year due to a violent incident in the campus involving a purposeful attack on a student. However, students say the battles are happening more often now. The Chief Scott Mansi attributes this improvement to a proactive approach.

“The presence of this visibility and these numbers were in the right place at the right time was a key component in seeing these numbers to decrease,” Mansy said.

The initiative also emphasizes the importance of monitoring the safety of students outside the school grounds. A recent catastrophe that hospitalized a student from the high school in Parkland, emphasized the need for vigilance.

“I think there is a problem with communication with school employees and what companies are added to the area. We have to be realistic about what things are there or within the scope of students during the school day,” Mansy added.

In the coming weeks, more tours have been planned, as school council leaders continue their efforts to provide transparency and safety.
