The department taps Dejero to deliver real-time streaming video to its real-time crime center during the International Black Theater Festival.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD) recently deployed the Dejero GateWay network aggregation device for critical connectivity during the International Black Theater Festival (IBTF).
During the six-day event, which transformed Winston-Salem into a mega-center for the performing arts, attracting more than 65,000 visitors, Dejero GateWay was deployed aboard a FUSUS/Compass Security Solutions mobile surveillance trailer equipped with Bosch PTZ cameras high definition downtown.
GateWay provided an Internet backhaul to stream continuous real-time video to the Winston-Salem Police Real-Time Crime Center, allowing the department to respond faster and more efficiently to potential incidents.
“We haven’t lost power,” said Lt. Ben Jones of the Winston-Salem Police Department. “The low-latency connection and clarity of camera feeds from locations where we previously had poor visibility meant our RTCC personnel could see and react to unfolding scenarios much faster and make better-informed decisions to to keep our employees and the public safe. “
Why Winston-Salem Police rely on Dejero GateWay
During the IBTF, Dejero GateWay was temporarily deployed in areas where optical infrastructure was unavailable and localized CCTV camera feeds relied on network connectivity from a single local cell tower that simply did not produce clear image resolution.
“At the same sites, during a similar large public event weeks earlier, we deployed traditional mobile connectivity solutions, trying SIM cards with a different priority network – but we were unable to achieve a consistent signal or enough bandwidth to be able to send with high definition video back to our RTCC,” says Jones.
“The congestion of the network due to the large crowds had a big effect,” he says. “For the IBTF, with GateWay mixing multiple IP networks from multiple operators together, a seamless path to connect to the RTCC was created and our situational awareness was greatly improved.”
The Winston-Salem Police Department’s vision is “to become a model agency in the use of innovative technology to complement quality policing to help solve and deter crime and to create more efficient processes and increase the safety of employees”.
“As we move forward, we are exploring Dejero’s unique connectivity solutions for a number of applications as part of our Drone First Responder (DFR) program, deploying Dejero devices in locations that do not have a hard-wired connection, for example,” says Jones.
“Having a network solution that delivers consistent quality streams allows RTCC to deliver critical information to staff in real-time and enable them to make better informed decisions,” he says.
