WINSTON-SALEM, NC — A police car overturned Sunday during a pursuit in the area, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
Around 9:10 a.m., officers said they were called to the 4200 block of Old Lexington Road for a report of a severe mental health crisis. This was with a person who was known to the police and who suffered from cognitive impairment.
The suspect is accused of assaulting a family member, stealing a vehicle and then leaving the scene of the crime.
While police were en route to the home, the suspect drove through residential yards and into oncoming traffic, creating an immediate danger to the public. Officers began a pursuit and attempted to stop the vehicle twice before the pursuit ended in a nearby parking lot. Police said the suspect tried to run away but was quickly apprehended by officers.
During the incident, an officer was involved in an accident that caused the patrol car to overturn. The officer suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.
No other injuries were reported. The individual was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
