A 4-4 record entering November isn’t what West Virginia head coach Neil Brown had in mind, but the reality he faces is troubling. A poor performance in the latter part of the 2024 season could cost him his job.
There’s been no indication from key decision makers that a change will be made, but it’s safe to assume that if the bottom falls out and they go 4-8 from 5-7, it will be hard to see the administration letting Brown go. returns as head coach in 2025
While the 3-17 record against ranked opponents is thrown around a lot, more troubling is that Brown has been responsible for three of the program’s six losing seasons since 1996. He needs three more wins this season to avoid a fourth losing campaign.
The schedule has certainly been challenging, but the manner in which these four losses have occurred is the most concerning. They looked as low as possible against Penn State, blew a double-digit lead late in the fourth quarter against bitter rival Pitt, spun and missed an opportunity to go up two early against Iowa State and gave up explosive play after explosive play in a huge loss to Kansas State.
The conversation surrounding Brown’s job could die down pretty quickly if the Mountaineers get hot. But for now, it’s fair to ask the question — is he the right guy for this program moving forward?
So, for this week’s X Fan Poll, we asked West Virginia fans if they believed Neil Brown would return as the Mountaineers’ head coach in 2025. 55.4% voted yes, while 44.6% expect a change to be made.
