Who are the Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages? – Cecil every day

Israel views security prisoners as terrorists, while the Palestinians view them as fighters of freedom who oppose military occupation in decades.

Almost every Palestinian has a friend or family member who has been imprisoned by Israel at some point for warlike attacks or smaller crimes such as rock throwing, protesting or membership in a forbidden political group. Some are held for months or years without a court in what is known as administrative detention that Israel says is necessary to prevent attacks and to avoid sharing sensitive intelligence.

Eighteen of the released on Saturday were sentenced to life, and 54 were serving long sentences for their participation in deadly attacks against Israelis. Seven of those convicted of the most serious crimes will be transferred to Egypt before the further deportation.

Among those who are released are 111 Palestinians who were rounded after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 against South Israel, which caused the war. They are detained without experience.

Here is a look at some prominent Palestinian prisoners, released after the entry into force of the ceasefire on January 19th.

Abu Shakhdam, 49, was sentenced to the equivalent of 18 life sentences for his participation in Hamas attacks, in which dozens of Israelis died during the Second Intifada, or the Palestinian Uprising, between 2000 and 2005.

Among the most scandalous of these attacks was a double suicidal attack that blew up two buses in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba in 2004, killing 16 Israelis, including 4-year-old and wounds over 100 others. In interviews with Arab media, he described his militancy as a desire for revenge stemming from the murder of his brother from the Israeli security forces in 2000.

Abu Shahdam was escaped weeks before his arrest in his hometown of Hebron on the west coast in November 2004, after a shootout with Israeli security forces, in which he was shot 10 times.

During 21 years in prison, his family said, he graduated from high school and won a psychology certificate.

The 61-year-old Al Tavil, a prominent Hamas politician on the occupied West coast, spent nearly two decades in and outside the Israeli prison, in part because of claiming that he had helped to load suicide attacks.

Most recently, the Israeli military arrested Al Tavil 2021, saying that he had participated in violent riots and mobilized Hamas’s political activists in Ramala, the seat of the semi -autonomous Palestinian authority and Hamas’s main rival.

Since then, he has been kept without charge or trial. After his arrest, he continued to hungry for more than three weeks to protest his administrative detention.

During one of Al Tavil’s pretensions in the Israeli prison in the early 2000s, he conducted a successful election campaign from custody to become mayor of Al Bireh, a city on the west coast, which is away from Ramala.

The 2007 US court documents, filed by the Israelis families killed during the Second Intifada, show that Al Tavil has been chairman of the Al-Islah charity, a front-day Hamas money organization for years. The case accused Al Tavil of recruiting Hamas to commit suicide bombing in 2001 aimed at a crowded pedestrian mall in Jerusalem, killing 11 people.

His daughter, 32-year-old journalist Bushra al-Tavil, was among the dozens of women and teens launched in the first round of prisoners for the host on January 19th.

He and another prisoner were immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment after their release on Saturday.

The Palestinian Manager of the World Vision Gaza Branch, a major Christian aid organization, was arrested in 2016 and accused of diversion of tens of millions of dollars per Hamas in the event of a high profile that has sparked criticism from rights groups. He was released on February 1st.

Both 47-year-old El-Halabi and World Vision vigorously denied allegations and independent investigations did not find evidence of misconduct. An independent audit found that El-Halabi had imposed internal control and ordered employees to avoid anyone suspected of Hamas’s relationships.

The rights groups say that El-Halabi was denied a fair and transparent test, as he and World Vision had no chance to review the evidence against them. UN experts say El-Halabi was questioned for 50 days without accessing a lawyer. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Israel attributes closed hearing to transmit information on sensitive security.

The 44 -year -old Amuri from the city of Jenin in the northern West coast was arrested for his alleged role in the production of a powerful car bomb that blew up to an Israeli bus full of passengers on June 5, 2002, killing 17 Israelis in what became known as Magidodo suicide bombing.

The attack during the Second Intifada took place in North Israel. The Palestinian militant group of Islamic jihad has taken responsibility.

Amuri was sentenced to life imprisonment, plus 20 years. He was among those transferred to Egypt on February 1 and exiled.

Zakaria Zubeidi is a prominent former belligerent leader and theater director whose dramatic Jailbreak in 2021 excites the Palestinians in the Middle East and stunned the Israeli security establishment.

Zubaidi was a senior military in the Martyr Brigade Al-Aksa at Urban Jenin’s refugee camp on the west coast. After the second Intifada in 2006, he co -founded the theater in Jenin to promote what he described as a cultural resistance against Israel. The Freedom Theater has put everything from Shakespeare to standup comedy to plays written by residents.

In 2019, after Zubaidi was already serving years in the attack in the early 2000s, Israel arrested him again for his alleged involvement in attacks in attacks aimed at Israeli settlers, but did not cause injuries.

Zubaidi, who was released on January 30 on the west coast, was waiting for a lawsuit in prison. He denies the allegations, saying that he has abandoned militantity to focus on his political activism after Intifada.

In 2021, he and five other prisoners got out of prison with maximum security in North Israel. All six were seized days later.

Hamas warrior during the Second Intifada, Abu Warda helped organize a series of suicidal attacks that killed more than 40 people and wounded more than a hundred others. Israel arrested him in 2002 and sentenced him to 48 life in prison, among the longest sentences he had ever issued.

As a young student Abu Warda, he joined Hamas at the beginning of the Intifada after the assassination of Israel by Yahya Ayyas, the leading bomb bomb producer in 1996.

The Palestinian authorities said at that time that Abu Warda had helped to hire suicide bombers whose attacks on crowded civilian areas in Israeli cities killed dozens of people in the early 2000s.

Abu Warda was released and deported on January 30th.

An activist in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Adee was sentenced to life imprisonment for a number of crimes that return to the second Intifada. Some of the allegations, according to the Israeli prison service, included planting an explosive device and attempted murder.

He was credited to think of the extraordinary escape from prison in 2021, when he and five other detainees, including Zubeidi, used spoons to tunnel one of the most secure prisons in Israel. They remained free days before they were caught.

He was welcomed as a cult hero in Ramala on January 25, as his family, friends and fans flooded him, some chanted “The Tunnel of Freedom!” In connection with his Jail.

All three men originated in the Silvan neighborhood, in Eastern Jerusalem, and rose in the ranks of Hamas. Derpen responsible for a string of deadly attacks during the second intifada, men received numerous life sentences in 2002.

They were accused of thinking of a suicidal attack in a crowded pool near Tel Aviv in 2002, killing 15 people. Later that year, they were found to have organized a bombing at the Jewish University, with nine people killed, including five American students. Israel had described an ode who at the time worked as an artist at the university, as an architect of the attack.

All three were transferred to Egypt on January 25th. Their families live in Jerusalem and said they would join them in exile.

The 67-year-old Al-Tos held the title of the longest continuous Israeli prison until his release last Saturday, the Palestinian authorities said.

For the first time, he was arrested in 1985 while fighting the Israeli forces along the Jordan border, the Fatah party activist spent a total of 39 years behind bars. Originally from the Witlehem city on the west coast, it is among the prisoners imprisoned on January 25.
