The Wizard of Oz is available on many different platforms online. The 1939 fantasy musical was adapted from L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel of the same name, starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Burt Lahr, Billy Burke and Margaret Hamilton. It was both a commercial and critical success, grossing $29.7 million against its $2.8 million budget and winning two Oscars, for Best Score and Best Original Song (for the iconic tune “Over the Rainbow”), in in addition to three other nominations, including Best Picture.

At the time of writing, the 1939 classic is available for streaming via the subscription platform Maxwhich was formerly known as HBO Max. Although the original The Wizard of Oz was an MGM production, and that studio is now a subsidiary of Amazon, the rights to the original film, in addition to a wider library of MGM titles, were purchased by Max’s parent company, Warner Bros., in the late 1990s.

The cost of a Max subscription varies depending on whether it is bundled with other services or purchased on an annual basis, but at the time of writing, the price for one month of Max is $9.99 per month at the lowest ad-supported level$16.99 per month for an ad-free tier and $20.99 for the best ad-free tier, which allows 4K streaming as well as expanded capacity for downloads and devices.

With a rental price set at $3.99 and a purchase price set at $14.99, it is cheaper to rent or buy the movie than to buy a monthly subscription to Max at any level other than the basic ad-supported level. However, it is more expensive than buying Blu-Ray The Wizard of Oz through Amazon with a Prime account, as it’s available for just $7.50 at the time of writing.

Based on Frank L. Baum’s book of the same name, The Wizard of Oz follows young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) who is transported to the magical land of Oz. Upon arrival, she encounters a witch, then enlists the help of a scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion to find the wizard and get home to her family.
