The Topeka City Council has elected its new deputy mayor this month.
Advisor Bret Kel was the choice of his peers. His responsibilities and goals follow next year.
At its core, the role of the deputy mayor is to cooperate with Mayor Michael Padila and to stand for him in his absence.
Christina Valdivia-Alkala, City Council and the newest deputy mayor, said she wanted Kel Lucky.
“I think, learn as much as you can, you know, during the year in which he will be in the position,” said Valdivia-Alkala.

Who is Bret Kel and how did you end up in the city government?
Kel is at his first term as a member of the City Council and has not decided whether to run for another term.
Before serving as a member of the Municipal Council, Kel works in a number of jobs, but one thing remained the same, his desire to help the people around him, whether he is prisoners while working in adjustments or those he has worked with welfare S
“I have always been a great supporter of” if you want something done, go out there and do it yourself “because you can scream and shout all day,” Kel said. “But if no one is ready to help you, enter there and do good.”
Kel is also a Navy veteran who likes to spend his free time at sports events. If a chance is given, he will tell you stories while you are on hockey games or play a baseball with your veterans friends.
While in the role of a deputy mayor, Kel said he was looking forward to working with Padila and dealing with the main problems in Topeka – like homelessness.
“Some of them are just continuing questions such as homelessness and an unharmed question,” Kel said.
