About 13 years older than Nevada’s statehood, Genoa was founded in 1851. Silver State’s first permanent agreement began as a commercial post for settlers immigrating to California. Initially, the settlement was called Mormon by Colonel John Reese, Mormon.

In 1854 the name of the city’s website was changed to Genoa. It is believed to be in honor of Christopher Columbus’ birthplace, Genoa, Italy, according to Genoa’s website in the city.
