Wilmington, NC (Wect) – You may not have a home thermal fuse device or even know what it is, but firefighters say if there is an oxygen therapy system inside your house – then you need to know about this equipment.
The device is called a thermal fuse.
“This is a way to prevent further injuries, it is a way to prevent full fires in the house when we can deal with an EMS call,” said Wilmington Fire Service captain Jean Holland.
Holland says they use home oxygen therapy systems for one of 10 homes in Wilmington.
“When we enter these houses, many of these people [they have] 50 to 75 feet hose, “Holland said.
Oxygen itself through this hose is not dangerous, but if a fire occurs, it can turn a bad situation into deadly.
“Someone who smokes a cigarette falls asleep and drops his cigarette. How quickly this will light up and how quickly it is covered, “Holland said.
With a heat fuse associated with oxygen tubes, it excludes oxygen flow to prevent the spread of fire.
“Just turn off the hose,” the Netherlands explained. “Turn on our double -woman adapter and plug [the hose] back into the system. “
Holland tried it while we were at the Fire Station on Monday and was working on how it was supposed.
“If it was the same setting in home oxygen used today and they have no thermal fuses, we are dealing with 50 feet from this burning,” Holland said.
Holland says that the only way he can really work is if people have and use it. Which starts making sure that people know about it.
“If that saves a life, we did our job,” Holland said.
