The FSA examines whether any Coca-Cola drinks in the United Kingdom contain high levels of chlorate.
It comes after production recalled drinks in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg after the test revealed “elevated levels” of chlorate.
The chemical is a by -product of the breakdown of the sanitization of chlorine and chlorine chemicals that are used to sterilize water.
It can cause iodine deficiency in humans and regulates the legitimate maximum limits of residues for a number of foods, including fresh production, according to Scotland food standards.
Coca-Cola Europacific partners, the Coca-Cola bottling partner, said he had received “no complaints or consumer concerns in the UK.”
Anne Gravet from FSA said: “The FSA Standards Agency (FSA) is exploring whether any Coca-Cola products containing” higher levels “of a chemical called Chlorate are in the United Kingdom market.
“If we identify any dangerous food, we will take action to ensure that it has been removed and warns consumers.”
In a statement, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners said: “The withdrawal is focused on Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, where most of the affected products are withdrawn from the sale.
“Routine tests identify that certain products contain increased levels of chlorate.
“Independent expert analysis has come to the conclusion that the likelihood of a related risk of feeling temporarily unwell by the consumption of these products is very low.
“This has affected a very smal number of imported cans of Appletiser, Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Bead with Fri 328 Geel 328 can.
“We have marked this issue of the Food Safety Authorities in the UK and are in communication with them.
“In the UK, we had no complaints or consumer concerns.”
In 2015, the European Food Safety Authority found that chlorate levels in drinking water and food were too high and could have serious health effects, especially among babies and children.
These include impaired thyroid function due to inhibition of iodine intake.
