Montgomery, VT. (WCAX) – Da -Day voters in the city in more than a dozen communities will consider accepting some form of local options tax to help pay local projects and infrastructure. And some of them also insist on a change from state legislators, who are said to help you alleviate your property taxes.
At the door to the Northeast Kingdom, visitors are stocking up provisions for their week off from Jay Peak to enjoy some of the deepest snow packages in the country.
“If it is just outside the topic to come and buy things, they also help us buy things,” says Robin Hole of Montgomery.
Montgomery road traffic has erupted in recent years. The community of about 1100 is now considering a 1% local tax on room and nutrition options to help financing local infrastructure.
“During the summer, during the season of the shoulder, during the mud season, in the unexpected times of the year, these businesses are struggling and not everyone can rest on their shoulders,” says Montgomery Tate Johnson.
Local options taxes are another way for cities to finance municipal services without raising ownership taxes after an average increase of 14% last year.
“There is definitely more pressure. The municipalities that can do so are striving for the local options tax to reduce the weight of ownership tax, “said Ted Brady of the Vermont cities and cities.
Montpelier is also considering a 1% local options tax to make approximately $ 600,000.
“The Vermont municipalities have very few money raising opportunities and this is one of the few options we have,” said Montpellier Mayor Jack McCoulow.
But cities say they could absorb more. The Vermont State collects 30% of all local taxes for a special fund options that goes to communities host state buildings and land. There is an excess of $ 13 million, and the Vermont League of cities and cities says state legislators should let the municipalities be more than that money.
If the voters at the day of the city meeting give the local taxes the thumbs, they will come into force. Thanks to a law passed last year, they no longer need approval by the legislature and the governor.
