1. Easy buckets
Early in that game, Virginia Tech went on a 15-0 run and it all started with open shots and drives to the basket. The Hokies made it up by finishing the first half on 50 percent 3-point shooting, 61 percent from the field and 55 points without foul shots through two quarters. The Hokies finished the game with 99 points on 61.8 percent shooting from the field, 44.4 percent from three, 77.8 percent from the free throw line and 68 points in the paint.
2. Aggressive defense
In the first quarter, the Hokies forced UNC Wilmington into seven turnovers, held the Seahawks to an abysmal 26.7 percent field goal percentage and led by as many as 23 points to end the first quarter at 34-11. The Hokies also finished the first quarter with four sacks and three blocks as a team. In the second half, the Hokies finished the game with 18 forced turnovers, nine steals and four blocks as a team.
3. Rebound
The Hokies outrebounded UNC Wilmington 38-20, leading to plenty of easy fast break baskets and second chance points. The Hokies scored 19 points in the paint, 24 three-pointers and five free throws.
4. Matilda Eh
Matilda Eck had 10 points in the first half to lead the team in scoring. She made two 3-pointers, grabbed rebounds to finish the game on 58 percent shooting from the field and hit both of her free throws. Eh finished the game with 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and one steal.
5. 3-point shooting and a total team effort
The Hokies shot over 40 percent from three-point range in that game, making 18 threes and making eight, good for 44.4 percent from behind the arc. That came as a result of the lack of shutouts and open shooting opportunities given to the Hokies. The Hokies finished with five points in double figures, with Baker scoring 14, Ech scoring 18, Wenzel 14, Petersen 12 and Michaud 14.
