A strong start and double-spirit from Toby Loal helped Virginia Tech win 76-66 victory over Florida on Wednesday in Talahasi, Florida.
Virginia Tech continued with 12-2 in the first five minutes, building a 20-point half, which never fell below six in the second half.
Hokies (9-12, 4-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) took advantage of the 17 points of Loa and 13 fights to secure the 400th victory in the career of coach Mike Young. Young is 101-76 at Virginia Tech after he went to 299-244 to Wofford.
Virginia Tech led 35-15 at the half, holding Florida State to only 6-28 shooting (21.4 percent), including 0-for-8 of 3-point range.
Jaden Shut added 16 points, hitting three 3-indicatives, helping Hokies stop the loss of three games. Jaden Young also hit three 3-point in the first half for nine points, and Mylyjael Poteat scored nine points.
Florida (13-8, 4-6) lost its third straight game. After fighting in the first half, Seminoles fired better in the second half, making 19 out of 34 shots (55.9 percent), including 8 of 17 (47.1 %) of a 3-point range.
Taylor Ball Bowen led Florida with 14 points and nine rebounds. Jerry Day scored 13 points from the bench, and Jamar Watkins added nine points, though he was fighting 4-for-13 shooting.
The state of Florida briefly tied the game to 2 with a Jumper to Bowen, but then watched Virginia Tech go 10 points to take the lead. The state of Florida cut him to 12-7 by a Watkins jumper, but Virginia Teh answered 13-4 runs closed by Ben Benham’s immersion.
In the second half, Florida decreased the lead to 49-43 by 8:08 left when arranged by Dakuan Davis. However, Virginia Tech answered 3-talers from Ben Hammond and Shut before Lowl’s game pushed the lead to 61-45.
