San Bernardino, California (KCAL/KCBS/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – a group of firefighters saved a woman with cerebral palsy, muscular disorder, from her burning home.

When the first responders of the San Bernardino County Fire Service arrived for a fire at home, they were immediately greeted with a mother who screams that her daughter with cerebral palsy was still inside. Firefighter Jesse Kuiken and fire captain Nick Turner realized that they couldn’t wait for a backup and jumped into action.

“We crawl down the corridor with smoke to the floor, zero visibility,” said Captain Turner. “My hand sticking to things, things were melting around me.”

The two men could not see anything, but the captain managed to find a handle through the smoke. The couple rushed and heard.

“I moved and found the victim to lie in bed,” Turner said. “I grabbed her and told her,” I took you and I won’t let you go. “

A backup arrived while the couple were inside and they began to ensure that firefighters and the girl had a quick way to escape through the girl’s window.

“We had to break the window,” said Captain Greg Soria. He and his crew are from another station that arrived to help extinguish the fire.

“I can’t bring it back through the structure without much more smoke,” Turner said. “Just then I saw Light and I called and my boys called.”

The girl was taken from home and firefighters, and the EMC treated her in place.

“We often have bad results, but seeing such a great result makes the work useful when it is difficult,” Turner said. “That’s what we live for and I’m incredibly proud.”
