Van Morrison becomes the first music artist at a residence at Queen University – Irvine Times

The partnership will see that the Brown Eyed Girl singer provides two students with fully funded scholarships to help her ambitions become professional musicians.

The cooperation that will last for a year will also see Morrison perform a series of special live performances in Belfast.

He comes when Queen’s celebrates his 180th anniversary, and a musician, born of Eastern Belfast, is preparing to celebrate his 80th birthday.

Sir Van described it “Wonderful opportunity”.

“I am glad to deepen my relationship with the University of Queen’s Belfast and look forward to presenting himself at a number of exclusive events throughout the year,” he said.

“This partnership is also a great opportunity to inspire students, to celebrate Belfast’s rich musical heritage and to return, supporting the next generation of musicians.”

President and Deputy Chancellor of the University of Queen’s Belpha, Professor Sir Ian Greer, said: “Dr. Van Morrison is one of the most distinguished musicians of our time and we are happy to have it for our” artist in the residence “.

“This initiative will provide invaluable opportunities for our students and the wider community as it enriches our cultural offers.

“As a university, we are committed to providing access to quality education to all students and partnerships, which is vital for this to happen.”

Sir Van was honored with an honorary doctor at the University in 2001 in recognition of the arts services and received Belfast freedom from the Belfast Municipal Council in 2013.

As part of the residence, he will play three concerts in Queen’s Witca Hall later this month, with tickets at a discount for students, followed by a series of performances and cooperation throughout the year.
