Virginia Beach – police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services in Virginia Beach carry less money than their colleagues in comparable localities in and outside Virginia, according to a new compensation study.
The payment of these specific employees is 5 to 10% under the comparable market average. For example, a police officer was paid $ 52,280 in Virginia Beach, while the average on the market was $ 58,302. The fire captain won $ 89,327 in Virginia Beach. The market average for the same job is $ 103,244.
“There is a lag that is happening,” says Patrick Braken, senior Vice President of Segal Group, who conducted the survey of compensation.
Bracken presented the findings of the municipal council meeting on Tuesday. Three market segments representing the competition of Virginia Beach were included in the analysis, including several public sector employers, as well as cities and cities outside Virginia with a similar population size and private sector data sources.
For Virginia Beach, it will lead to nearly 60 work titles to the average market, it will cost the city nearly $ 30 million, said city manager Patrick Djukhai.
Last month, the Council learned that more than $ 1 billion was needed in six years to finance existing and new projects to improve capital. They recommended blowing Scan or slow down some projects Instead of increasing the real estate tax to pay for them. Employees’ promotions will extend the upcoming budget even smoother.
“Some of this really should not surprise us, because our public safety people tell us that they do not have as much rest as the other localities and are not paid as much,” said the deputy mayor Rosemary Wilson. “So now we have proof.”
The City Council requested from the wage survey last year after The City Council decided not to allow employee groups the possibility of collectively bargaining For higher salaries and improved working conditions.
The survey examined 7,500 full -time and part -time workers at state positions and public safety and found that 58 types of work were lagging on the market by at least 5%.
The SEGAL group measures the city’s market position for a basic payment, additional payment, benefits and work arrangements. Overtime hours were not included in the constitutional officers, appointed by the Municipal Council and the selected employees were excluded from the study.
He recommended two cost models: remain competitive or run the market. In order to maintain a competitive advantage, Virginia Beach can give 48% of its employees an increase in salaries by a price of about $ 21 million, but this figure does not include pay benefits. In order to be a leading employer in the market, the city can give 76% of its employees an increase, which will cost $ 55.5 million.
Mayor Bobby Dyer said he wanted Dihai to start first examining promotions for public safety employees.
“When you think about the nature of the work that our public safety (employees) does, and literally putting your life on the line … Look at at least attention if we can understand it,” the mayor said.
