MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – UW-Madison students brightly decorated the windows outside the Memorial Union on Sunday to kick off Homecoming week.
The UW-Madison Homecoming Committee has been preparing for the celebration for months. A full week of fun includes everything from shows to tailgates to parties and parades.
“We kind of start before the summer even starts, just figuring out what events we want to do, things we want to change,” said Wisconsin Homecoming Committee President Wynton Wright. “It’s heading into the summer and working out all the fine details from start to finish of the events, and once we’re on campus it’s just putting the final touches together and a few tweaks.”
On Sunday, the committee hosted its annual Paint the Town event to mark the beginning of Homecoming Week. Student organizations let their imaginations run wild, demonstrating their school spirit by decorating windows outside the Memorial Union and along State Street.
“Paint the Town is about finding our own communities here on campus and being able to spread those communities and make people aware of some of our safe spaces,” Wright said. “And then that just started the whole week.”
Each year, several businesses on State Street have the opportunity to ask UW students to decorate their windows in honor of Homecoming Week.
