Washington (AP), a federal scholarship aimed at strengthening students from undervalued and rural areas attending historic black colleges and universities, has been detained.

The US Department of Agriculture has stopped the 1890 Student Program, which provides recipients with full training and fees for students studying agriculture, food or natural resources sciences at one of 19 universities known as the 1890 grant institutions.

It is unclear exactly when the program was suspended, but some members of the congress first issued statements criticizing the program suspension on Thursday.

“The 1890 scientist program has been suspended in anticipation of an additional review,” says the Ministry of Agriculture in a publication on the program website.

The suspension coincides with the establishment of President Donald Trump’s President Donald President. Administration officials said the pause was necessary to review whether the costs were in line with Trump’s executive orders on issues such as climate change and diversity, justice and inclusion.

A spokesman for the department said on Saturday in an email to the Associated Press that “Every scientist – over 300 – regardless of the date of maturity, is reserved to complete his studies and to finish his work with the department.” The spokesman added that secretary Brooke Rollins will review the scholarship program, his mission and his performance to guarantee effective taxpayer resources.

The freezing of funding has been challenged in court, with a temporary retention of enforcement actions already exists.

Affected universities include Alabama A&M, Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T and Tuskegee University in Alabama.

The scholarship program dates back to 1992, but 1890 in the title refers to the second Moril Act of 1890, which established historic black colleges and universities.

Eligibility rules include being a US citizen with GPA 3.0 or better, along with the admission of one of the 19 universities for grant from 1890. Eligible students should also study agriculture or related areas and yes “They demonstrate leadership and public services,” according to the site of the department.

In October, the department said it had allocated $ 19.2 million to the program. In the fiscal 2024, 94 students were awarded scholarships, the department said.
