RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – For many in our community, providing adequate food for their families continues to be a constant concern.
“Empty bellies aren’t able to do their best in school, it’s just a human need that we want to restore if at all possible,” Washoe County Chief Operating Officer Adam Searcy said.
But new federal funding aims to make that less of a problem.
Searcy attended a meeting Monday at Sparks Christian Fellowship discussing the issue with USDA Undersecretary Cindy Long, representing the federal government.
“We’ve invested billions in recent years,” Long said. “Recently a $1.7 billion investment.”
It was on October 1st that it was announced, with $1.2 billion of that money going to support schools, daycares, food banks and other institutions across the country.
“States have some flexibility in how they will use these funds,” Long says. “But the way it works here in Nevada is the state works with the Nevada growers to buy the food and get it to the schools and now to the daycares.”
