University of Nevada, Reno celebrates the Month of Black History with events in February – Nevada today

The collection of students, teachers, employees and the community, a monthly program of events covering the topic of afrofurism will begin on February 3 and will continue in February 26 at the campus at the university. Associated students from the University of Nevada (ASUN), diversity, social justice and inclusion (DSJI), African Student Association (UNR ASA), the Black Student Organization (BSO) and the Multicultural Center have united to create a common program provision program , sharing and connecting as we honor black history, culture, community and future.

“At a time when the community and affiliation are more important than ever, we remain committed to supporting our students by raising a space where culture, creativity and resilience flourish.”

Throughout February, in addition to special events, the multicultural center will be open daily from 8:00 to 17:00, on the third floor of JCSU as a place for students to connect, create and decompress while celebrating the month of black history. Each week, the center will deal with cultural crafts that worship black art and history. During the first week of February, people can explore Alma Thomas’s work as the center invites students to create expressive arts inspired by her heritage.

    Test your knowledge of black history while enjoying free browns and coffee.
  • Men’s basketball: Nevada vs Freen
    Monday, February 10, 20:00 | Lawlor event center
    Fasted the Nevada Wolf package as they take Freshno State.
  • Share the crown drive
    Tuesday, February 11, 18-8 Student Union of Joe Crowley, Rooms 323 and 324
    Help create a Renault Hair Care Packages for Black Wall Street. Volunteers will receive free bowls with chipot as deliveries continue.
  • Afro-Latin’s presentation in the movie: screening and discussion of the movie
    Wednesday, February 12, 5:00 pm | Multicultural center
    Join the adaptation of an innovative Mexican fantastic film that sheds light on Afro-Latin communities-often neglected part of Mexico’s culture. This movie, made with local non -professional actors, provides a unique perspective on identity, social problems and representation. Stay for a discussion about the historical and colonial contexts, the dynamics of gender and power and the role of making films in visibility.

    Join DSJI to learn more about Curly Care Care and get free hair care supplies while deliveries continue.
  • Fashion show
    Thursday, February 20, 6:00 pm | Wells Fargo Auditorium
    Celebrate black culture through fashion and crafts with free refreshments.
  • Games, Grub, Good Vibes Student and Faculty Mixer
    Friday, February 21st, lunch Multicultural center
    Join the black teacher and staff for the afternoon celebrating the community and the relationship.
  • Black cultural festival
    Tuesday, February 25, 5:30 pm | Joe Crowley Student Union Ballrooms
    Enjoy the signature of the month and get involved in aphrofurism. This event includes food, music, performances and a chance to engage with partners within and outside the campus.
  • Women’s Basketball: Nevada vs Colorado State
    Wednesday, February 26, 6:30 pm | Lawlor event center
    Close the month by cheering on the Nevada women’s basketball team as they take Colorado.

Annamarie oshiokpekhai, director of the variety for Asun Idea, has helped to organize and plan many of these events.

“I am so glad that I am in an Asun position where I can bring in the black culture and history in all its aspects to the forefront,” said Oshiocpehai. “The student’s involvement center did a research and found that black campus students were more likely to feel like not belonging to the campus. I saw the event of the Black Cultural Festival be an annual reminder that we belong, we are worthy of attention and celebration and are part of the next generation that changes the world. In order to be able to celebrate our history, culture, joy and roles in the future, the things that people everywhere are trying to deny and suppress, sincerely brings me so much happiness! “

Through these events, the university aims to honor the rich heritage of black history, while promoting affiliation in the community community of life campus. Everyone is encouraged to attend, study and participate in this month of reflection, celebration and growth.
