University of Nevada, Renault students voluntarily participate with local non -profit organizations of Martin Luther King, junior, national day of service – Nevada today

Associated students from the Center for Students at the University of Nevada and the Multicultural Center organized two opportunities for students to voluntarily participate in the community on January 20, 2025. The date honored Martin Luther King, Jr. for the national day of service. In addition, the Center for Students and the Multicultural Center were awarded with a Catherine Cortez Masto Senator’s office.

“The Day of the MLK service is part of Dr. Martin Luther King’s holiday throughout the campus and his commitment to social justice,” says Amy Coakes, a senior associate director of the Student Center. “These were great ways to learn about some wonderful organizations in our community, to meet new people, to help the community first -hand and to celebrate Dr. King!”

The students managed to volunteer either with the Truckee Meadows Boys and Girls Club, or with the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation. The Coordinator for Student Student Center Katie Castro has helped organize opportunities.

“Being able to train young people in the community for the work of Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr. as a peaceful protester who has argued for people’s rights, was a really incredible opportunity for our students,” she said. “This education for social justice and the opportunity to participate in the civil service brings the values ​​and theories that students learn in their classes in the real world. It is amazing to watch our students work in the community and make positive changes. “

Volunteers at the Boy and Girls Club lead artistic activity for participants to create marching signs and then held a silent hike around the boy and girls facility. More than 100 children participated in the event. Volunteers also read a story about Martin Luther King, Jr., and have discussed why this day is being celebrated.

The Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation held Bioblitz, an event in which the groups work together to find and identify as many species as possible while cleaning the area. Bioblitz is an important tool for measuring the environmental health of an area and this year Bioblitz was held in the area of ​​Nature Study Rosewood, an area that works for restoration as a functional habitat of wetlands.

University student Hunter McNab, a first -year student, studying microbiology and immunology, has never already participated voluntarily on National Day of Office and was excited to try something new. He voluntarily joined the club for boys and girls.

“University volunteering was a fun experience; I met many of my peers and had to contact shared values ​​and the fun to engage with the local community, “McNab said. “Also, I thought the experience was low stress because everything was organized for us and everyone was so kind. I believe it is important to voluntarily get involved in the community, especially on the day of the MLK JR service, because he acknowledges the victims that people have made years ago so that we have the freedoms and opportunities we have now. I think an important message is that national holidays are not supposed to be long weekends; They are supposed to be cases to think and appreciate the experiences that previous leaders have gone through so that we can continue their work and to better understand our history. “

McNabb is expecting voluntary participation again and has been inspired by the welcoming environment and spirit of partnerships in the community. These acts of service and participation in the Community are ways that McNab and other students who have voluntarily got involved really embody the Wolf Pack path.
