Two unbeaten records fall in thrilling weekend of rugby action in Ayrshire – Irvine Times

It comes after two of the best teams in the area so far this campaign have seen their unbeaten records slip away with narrow defeats.

The only club still boasting a perfect nine wins from nine games is Ayr RFC – who are still top of the National Premiership.

The Millbrae club have been dominant so far and continued their great form with a 36-12 win away to Edinburgh Academical FC on Saturday 26th October.

It was also a record win for the club – who have made their best start to a Premiership campaign this season.

While another South Ayrshire club Marr RFC did not enjoy the same fortunes at the start of their Premiership season.

After losing 12-22 at home to Melrose Rugby, the Troon side remain third from bottom and eight points adrift of the sides above.

Moving down the leagues and Garnock RFC are now without a win in four games – having lost their National Division Three game at home to Orkney RFC 61-31.

The result left the Lochshore side third from bottom, although in an incredibly tight league table they remain just 11 points adrift of top spot.

Into National Division Four and Ardrossan Accies were the first Ayrshire side to see their unbeaten run end at the weekend.

They hosted the only other club in the league yet to taste defeat, Strathmore away at Memorial Field.

And in a hotly contested game, the visitors managed to win 17-12, ending a streak that stretched back to last season.

Despite the loss, Ardrossan maintain top spot in the division, five points clear of their opponents – who have two games in hand.

The next unbeaten run to end was that of Kilmarnock in the Western Region First Division.

After getting a scare last weekend, Lenzie managed to become the first side to beat the East Ayrshire club this season – a 28-27 win.

The result means both sides now have identical records this season, although Killie remain top by earning one more bonus point than Lenzie.

Elsewhere in the division it was a great weekend for Cumnock RFC who climbed the table thanks to a 25-18 win away to East Kilbride RFC.

Cumnock have now moved up to sixth position, just nine points behind third place.

In Western Division Two, Carrick RFC continued to pile on the pressure at the top of the table.

A stunning 67-10 win at home to Loch Lomond/Helensburgh keeps them seven points clear of leaders Strathendrick.

The table leaders traveled to Ayrshire this weekend to take on Irvine RFC who despite a valiant effort lost 14-33 to Marress.

In women’s rugby, Ayr RFC continued their resurgence in Western Division One with their second win in a row.

In a challenging encounter away to Wigtownshire, they ran out narrow 12-10 winners and are now just one point off the bottom of the table.

Unfortunately for Irvine, they were on the wrong side of a tight game at the weekend – as they lost 14-21 at home to Cartha Queens Park 2nd XV.

The result drags the North Ayrshire side down to bottom – from which they are now just one point clear.
