PHOENIX – Two Phoenix police officers were injured during a physical struggle with a suspect who ended up being shot and killed Sunday night.
The Oct. 20 incident happened near 37th Boulevard and Glendale Avenue around 8:15 p.m. Crime scene tape surrounded the Dollar Tree as investigators went in and out of the store and collected evidence.
Phoenix Police Sergeant Phil Krinsky says officers responded to reports of a man armed with a knife breaking into the business. When they got there, an employee showed officers where the man was, and that’s when he allegedly ran to the store’s warehouse and jumped on top of a cooler.
He then jumped and then a fight broke out between the suspect and two police officers. The suspect allegedly grabbed one of the officer’s stun guns and pointed it at one of the officers. This is when the shooting exploded.
The officers were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Sgt. Krinsky said. As for the suspect, he was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 31-year-old Essex Jackson.
