Tributes paid to the highly respected former councilor Charlie Gilbert – Glasgow Times

Charlie Gilbert, who served on the Council of Eastern Renfryshire until 2022, unfortunately died on Friday, January 10 at the age of 78.

For more than 40 years, Charlie has devoted his life to helping people in the area, for the first time becoming a local advisor in 1980 for the Regional Council of Eastwood, which was later included in ERC.

During a long and distinctive career, Charlie also served as an adviser to the Glasgow Regional Council from 1977 to 1999.

The Provider Mary Montag said: “Everyone in the advice of Eastern Renfruvri is deeply saddened to hear about the passage of former councilor and colleague Charlie Gilbert.

“Charlie serves his community in Newton Mirls North and Neilston Ward and during that time made a great influence on his constituents.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are in his family at this very difficult time.”

Born on September 9, 1946, Charlie was brought up in Rudri in Glasgow and attended the Whitehill Secondary School in Denstun.

Initially, when he left school, he entered the public service, where his work involved dealing with questions such as social security benefits.

After meeting with her future wife, Rhone at the Rutherglen Young Conservative Club, the couple married in 1975 at Baroni Church in Glasgow before enjoying their acceptance at Eastwood House.

Charlie and Rhone moved to Newton Mirmnes in 1977, where they continue to live for many happy years.

The couple welcomed their first daughter in April of the same year and second daughter Eilid in 1980.

Charlie, who will unfortunately be missed by many, was also the grandfather of Archie, Isabella and Kaylein-Ire and the father-in-law of Malcolm and Morris.

In his spare time, he was involved in photography and enjoyed many holidays with the whole family to the dashes, where many happy memories were made.

A very hardworking and caring man, Charlie was dedicated to his constituents and for some time acquired shifts, driveing ​​emergency doctors around.

His wife Rona said, “We worked so well together and I will miss it terribly.

“As an advisor, he was called all hours, day and night. It didn’t worry, he just got up and went and did everything.

“Sometimes he would return the people to the house to keep them until he could arrange what he had to do.

“He was a very caring man and very thoughtful. He was so good with people and so dedicated to his work.

“Each composition couldn’t praise him enough because he always did things for them.”

Advisor Gordon Wallace, the Conservative Group of the Eastern Renfruvir Council, also paid tribute to his “dedicated and reliable colleague”.

“Advisers and officers were also saddened to hear Charlie’s passage,” he said.

“Charlie is a kind of kindness from all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“His unwavering engagement to public service was truly exemplary.

“With extensive experience in committees, including education, audit and control, and transport, Charlie has brought invaluable knowledge and insight from local authorities.

“His tireless efforts have always moved from the desire to achieve only the best for the residents of Newton Mirmnes North and Neilston.”

Charlie’s funeral was to be held on Friday at Glasgow Road’s Hurlet Crematorium.
