Top Chef’s Dan Jacobs to be University of Wisconsin-Madison’s 2024 Winter Commencement Keynote, the University announced Tuesday.
Jacobs, executive chef and co-owner of applauded Milwaukee restaurants EsterEv and Dandan will share their “recipe for success” with the graduates.
“I want to share the challenges I’ve faced but also celebrate the journey itself,” Jacobs said in a press release. “Success to me will be seeing some nodding heads, some smiles and maybe a few moments of reflection realizing that they too can overcome whatever life throws at them.”
Jacobs has picked up over $90,000 to spread awareness of Kennedy’s illness and was one of four Americans to speak to President Joe Biden on behalf of independent restaurant owners. He also helped with the cultivation $26.8 billion for the Restaurant Revitalization Fund and is actively involved in several charities such as No Kid Hungry and Main Street Alliance.
Jacobs intends to share her challenges and experiences on Top Chef in her speech.
“It’s been a crash course in tenacity, grit and perseverance—all skills that are essential in life, and that’s where real growth happens,” Jacobs said. “Competing in the show was proof to myself that my disability should not limit or define my potential.”
Senior Class President Sam Mahlum said “[Jacobs] embodies the aspirations of so many Badgers – to do good in this world and live a life of integrity and compassion.”
The 2024 Winter Commencement will be held on SundayDec. 15 at the Kohl Center.
