FREMONT, CA. – A 3-year-old child was killed Monday morning in Fremont after being struck by a vehicle, according to police.
Around 11:45 a.m., Fremont police began receiving multiple 911 calls about a vehicle and a pedestrian.
Officers arrived in the area of Dunsmuir Common and Colleen Terrace and found a 3-year-old child injured. Officers began performing life-saving measures and the fire department soon arrived to offer further medical assistance, but the child died at the scene.
Investigators believe an elderly driver was driving his vehicle forward from a parking lot when the child unexpectedly moved in front of him. The front left part of the car hit the child. Police said the driver stopped immediately and cooperated fully with the investigation.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but police say drug or alcohol use was not a factor.
“As we grieve this tragic incident with our community, please respect the family’s privacy at this incredibly difficult time,” Fremont police said on social media Tuesday night. “We’d also like to remind drivers to always be alert – on the road, in the driveway or in the parking lot. Always scan for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and anything moving around you.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Fremont Police Traffic Division by calling the Fremont Police Department at (510) 790-6760.
