RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — Following the Lemon Valley flooding and evacuations Thursday, Truckee Meadows Water Authority crews are repairing and restoring a broken water main on Matterhorn Drive.
TMWA says repairs will take several days. If they can start filling it tomorrow, it could be done by Monday or Tuesday. Crews are using huge machines to lay rock, sand and dirt to fill the hole before paving.
The authority says a 12-inch connection that connects to the Fish Springs water main is damaged. It appears to be a mechanical defect, not the pipe or corrosion. The Fish Springs water main was installed in 2006, a relatively new pipe that is expected to last up to 50 years.
The sinkhole originally measured 30 feet by 40 feet, but crews believe it is now larger than that after draining all the water from that area.
Matterhorn Drive is closed between Fir Drive and Tupelo Street until repairs are completed.
Lemmon Valley residents have water service and evacuations lifted Thursday around 1 p.m.
