Sioux Falls, SD (Dakota News Now) – In this edition of Throwback Thursday, Lori Kent with the local Lou Podcast shares the story of John W. Tutil, who was a leading businessman in the first days of Sioux Falls.
After hearing about the growth potential in Sioux Falls, Tuthill moved from Iowa and purchased Edwin Sharpe & Co. Lumber in the early 1880s. At the time of Tutil’s death in 1922, John W. Tuthill Lumber had 32 wooden yards in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.
The Eastern Eighth Street building, which housed Tuthill’s business, still stands to this day and is now occupied by Dewitt Designs. Tutil’s heritage was also awarded through a park and an urban unit that were named after it.
