South Carolina Senate unanimously confirmed Thomas S. Mulikin, Doctor of Science, JD, as the new director of the South Carolina Natural Resources Department (SCDNR) on Wednesday.

He had been sworn in by Senate President Thomas K. Alexander.

Mullikin will lead the agency by monitoring its work under the guidance of the seven -member natural resource council.

He takes on Robert H. Boils, Jr., who retires after more than 30 years of service.

“The service of our country as the director of the Ministry of Natural Resources for one of the most beautiful places on Earth is the honor of a lifetime,” Mulikin said. “I grew up hunting, fishing, tourism and diving through the state of palm. Our hunters and fishermen were the original environmentalists and we will work with incredible state leaders and great professionals at SCDNR to ensure that we protect these natural resources for future generations.”

Previously, Mullikin was chairman of the South Carolina Flood Commission, appointed by governor Henry McMaster.

He is an experienced environmental lawyer with worldwide experience in environmental issues.

Mulikin also holds a joint position of a research professor at the University of South Carolina and the school for the coastal environment of the University of Carolina.

A passionate person outdoors, he has completed SCUBA certified divers in each ocean and summarized over 20 mountains, including peaks on all seven continents.

“Dr. Mulikin is the right person at the right moment to lead the next chapter in SCDNR,” said board President Norman Puliam. “The Council is grateful to the Senate for the confirmation of his appointment and thanks to the Director of the Bols for his years of service and management. Mullikin is a decorated senior military officer in a pension who serves with a lawyer for US army lawyer, a reserve of the US Army, where he was the international legal officer and assistant judge attached to an element of the US Special Operations Command.

Mulikin retired as Major General/Commander of the State Guard of the National Assembly.

Mulikin is from Camden, where he and his wife Virginia Anne still live. They have four children and five grandchildren.
