Baton Rouge – The phone rang and called at the end of Kailin Gilbert. Tennessee finally returned his call, but late.

When the LSU basketball guard was in the transfer portal of the past out of the past and actively shopping his game for the next home, Rocky Top was on his list of places he wanted to check.

But the new Lady Vols coaching staff was too late in the race.

And this remotely lit fire under Gilbert twice, and the tigers # 4 have fought Tennessee.

Gilbert scored a combined 45 points, including 23 points in the LSU 82-77 victory over Lady Vols on Sunday in the center of Pete Maravic’s Assembly.

“I can say that they picked up the phone too late in the portal,” Gilbert said when he asked him why the Tennessee match was good for her. “I was kind of upset by it.

“So there you get the fire from every time I play them.”

“I’m probably glad they were late,” Kim Burluckers raised during a team press conference after the matches.

Belberts trusted Gilbert in both matches against Tennessee this season at the biggest moments. At the first meeting at Knoxville in January, Gilbert struck the acrobatic victorious load of the game to lift the tigers, 89-87.

Gilbert scored 23 points against Lady Vols on Sunday, hitting a monster 3, which gave a lead to LSU. She made a pair of free throws that stretched the tiger lead up to 80-76 with 21 seconds.

“She was a phenomenal today,” Lady Vols Kim Caldwell’s first -year coach said after the match. “I think I did a really bad job when I recognized and adapted to it. She killed us in our place. So if we play them again, we have to do a better job of it.

“But she does such a good job by finding her seats, hits big pictures and inserting other people into the game – inserting the crowd into it. She makes big plays and is a good player.”

After Rocky Top’s heroic performance, Gilbert had no other game in which she scored more than 6 points. She had performances where she fired 2 of 12, 1 out of 9, 1 out of 8 from the floor. But the lightweight and her coaching staff have never deviated from Gilbert and how she can influence the team when the game is online.

“She is a more adult player, she has worked it (funk),” Blvish said. “I listen to my coaches more than you think. I tell them to make suggestions, if you make 10 suggestions, I could listen to only one of them, but I keep suggestions.

“I provide (an assistant coach of LSU) Gary Redus Credit because he said to me,” Go with kg. This is the style and type of game that it can thrive. “I give him merit that I returned it after the first time I took her out.”

The challenge for Gilbert is now to stay in the inertia he builds. By traveling to No. 6 Texas, which knocked down # 2 South Carolina at home on Sunday, the next and the post -season game around the corner, Business and Gilbert know that her game can be crucial to a team looking to win championships.

“I watched the movie late nights, trying to get out of this,” Gilbert said. “We hope this is the beginning of something.”
