Another change in the way the athletics teams come to North Carolina.

On Tuesday, the meeting of the Board of Directors of NCHSAA, the Council unanimously approved the adoption of a large 32 model, which will put the 32 most large schools in the state in one classification.

The decision comes after the Council approved an eight-class system that will enter into the 2025-26 school year, in 2023. Currently, all state 437 state high schools compete in one of the four classes.

The pre -classification process uses the average daily membership numbers of each school, which are updated at the beginning of each school year. For Wilmington, two teams may be in the new classification

According to the current numbers of AMD, Laney and Hoggard will join the new classification model. They would join schools such as Adrie Kel and Myers Park, the largest public high schools in North Carolina, in the classification.

The BIG 32 classification teams will fall into the 8A class, while all other schools would enter 1-7A hours.

Ashley and Topsail, currently part of the largest classification of the state, will move to the 7A classification.

What does this mean for the conference in the average?

The Mideastern Conference, which includes teams from New Hanover to the Counts Brunswick and Pender, is currently divided by a 3A/4A conference.

With the passage of Lani and Hoggard, Ashley and Topsail, they will move to the 7A classification if the current AMD numbers are retained. New Hanover will be 5a (although Wildcats could be in the 6A classification after new numbers are released) while North Brunswick, South Brunswick and West Brunswick will move to the 4A classification.

This would make four separate classifications in the conference in the middle. While the committee would ideally want only two classifications at a conference, he admitted that this may not be possible in some parts of the country.

How will the playoffs work?

Much of the criteria on how state playoffs will work, including qualification requirements, have not been determined.

The BIG 32 24-28 team will compose playoffs. The current 32 team brackets will remain in classes 2-7a. For teams in the 1A classification will be used 16 team playoff clay.
