Family and friends said goodbye at Memorial Plan Funeral Home in Miami to Julio and Manuela Hernandez, an elderly Cuban couple who lost their lives after being hit by a vehicle last Sunday in Hialeah, Telemundo 51 reported.
The Hernandez family, who were married for more than 60 years, were known to go out every afternoon to play the lottery, but their routine ended tragically when they were hit by a driver who fled the scene.
The funeral was held last Thursday in Miami.
The incident happened around 7:00 p.m. on October 13 when the couple was trying to cross East 8th Avenue near 47th Street in Hialeah. Julio, 87, and Manuela, 84, died at the scene.
The driver involved, Susey Calchines, 47, was arrested the next day and now faces charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
According to the police report, Calsines did not help the victims or provide information after the crash.
Her vehicle, a black Mercedes Benz GL450, was followed by police to an apartment complex in northwest Miami-Dade, where the woman was identified as the suspect.
At the time of his arrest, Calcines claimed he had no recollection of the incident, citing an undisclosed medical condition.
Although the woman has no history of reckless driving, she faces serious legal consequences. Judge Mindy C. Glazer set bail at $30,000 and placed her under house arrest with an ankle monitor, in addition to barring her from driving.
Maria, Hernandez’s daughter, was the one who identified them after the incident.
In Florida, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death can carry penalties of up to 15 years in prison in addition to substantial fines.
