Virginia, USA, the Virginia Senate, has adopted the bill to terminate tax exemption for organizations related to the FRIDAY Confederation.

The home bill was adopted, although the same legislation was previously imposed on a veto by governor Glen Youngkin in 2024. He said that “narrowly targeting specific organizations to obtain or lose such tax exemptions determines inappropriate precedent”.

The bill will terminate the exemption from taxes for organizations that are bound by the Confederation, including the Virginia Department of the United Daughters of the Confederation, the General Organization of the United Daughters of the Confederation, the Confederation Memorial Society, the Stoeni Memorial Department Confederation veterans and Jeb Stuart Birthplace Preservation Trust, Inc.

This legislation was introduced by Del Alex Askeu (D-95), which said it wanted to ensure that Virginia’s resources were not used to promote division.

“This legislation is more than tax policy – it is to ensure that Virginia’s resources are not used to subsidize organizations that promote the division and glorification of a painful past,” said Alex Askeu delegate. “By sending this bill to the governor’s desk, we confirm our commitment to a more inclusive and thinking Virginia.”

The Committee on Finance and Budget Loans voted in a general meeting and the bill was adopted. The bill is now heading for the governor’s desk Glenn Yunkin for approval.
