Salt Lake City (Kutv) – A measure described as “destruction of the Union”, cleared significantly and not final vote in the Senate on Thursday-Dori as a “replacement bill” is in the work.
HB 267, which stops collective negotiation for public officials in Utah, has accepted the state senate after a dull debate on the floor.
Senate’s minority leader Luz Eskamila called the Plan “Attack against Trade Unions, Period.”
Firefighters and paramedics watched the Senate Gallery. Union members have been in the Capitol for days, calling for legislators to withdraw the proposal.
Senator John Johnson, R-Cache County, expressed support for saying that his first duty was taxpayers.
“Due to collective negotiation, performance and accountability occupy the back,” Johnson said, “since strict contracts make it difficult for the remuneration for excellence and the removal of employees with less results.”
Senator Dan Thatcher, Valley of the R-West, voted not.
“We have not considered all the employees who are affected,” he said. “I want to see the replacement. It’s not a race. We still have five weeks and a day left” in the session.
Proponents of the measure stressed that the plan applies to public workers in the country, not to private subject workers.
Senator Brady Bramer, R-UTAH, said that public officials were not well represented by workers, insisting “they would be better without them.”
The replacement bill could still allow collective negotiation of public officials, but perhaps only if most workers approve of trade unions represents them in contract negotiations.
The vote on Thursday was 18-10.
The Senate can take the replacement bill as early as Friday.
