A teacher in northern Texas and an immigration defender urges schools to prepare before the potential federal law enforcement.
Last week, Trump’s administration removed the protection of sensitive places such as schools and churches that restrict arrests related to immigration.
Brenda Gonzalez with non -profit Immschools works with areas and immigrant families and said he knew the parents were scared.
“Many parents want to withdraw their children from school,” she said. “They have questions whether students can be detained or not arrested in schools now.”
Gonzalez said, unlike the first Trump administration, many areas are reluctant to report plans on how to deal with the application of campus immigration.
“As for schools and areas, one of the things I noticed is that they are very hesitant to have the support that students and families are needing at the moment,” she said. “I would hope to see more support from the district leaders.”
Kera reached for several school areas of the northern Texas to respond to the order of the Ministry of Internal Security; Many did not answer. Dallas ISD told Kera in a statement that she was “engaged to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, employees and families, regardless of their immigration status.”
The school board accepted a resolution in 2017, defining all campuses as “as welcoming and protective at the most full degree of law”.
Gonzalez said the federal authorities need an order to enter schools – otherwise administrators may protect them.
“The front office staff may assume that since it is an officer with a uniform, they have the right to have access,” she said. “Reality is information about students and parents are protected unless they have a court order.”
She said that parents also need to know their rights – especially under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
“We reassure them that schools are still a safe place … Their information is still protected. Therefore, we hope schools have plans and protocols, so if the ice staff appear in schools, they are not” T simple Play the kid or release information to children or parents. “
