Approximately 30 residents gathered at the Canyon Primary School cafe on Thursday night for a mayoralty, led by Mayor Prom John Echevaria.
The discussion has covered a number of local problems, including crime, traffic safety and traffic jams, moving free roaming donkeys of Colton and fire evacuation procedures. The meeting lasted about an hour and a half.
The residents expressed a mixture of powerlessness and solidarity with regard to crime, citing a recent Kolton breakthrough by Prado Lane. While some asked whether the Colton police had done enough to protect the residents, Echevaria acknowledged their concerns and assured the crowd that he would insist on hiring more police officers during “budget negotiations” in March.
“Set up and you will see John Echevaria fighting for more police officers,” Echevaria said.
Traffic safety and congestion in the canyon was another major problem. Several residents have indicated reckless driving and frequent difficulties in Prado Lane and Reche Canyon. The idea of a roundabout seemed to be promising, but the Reche Canyon is run by six “separate jurisdictions”, including Riverside County, San Bernardino County, Kolton, Loma Linda, Redland and Moreno Valley, Echevaria said.
“I made other people ask for the roundabout,” said Echevaria, “And we know that this will slow down the traffic exceptionally.” However, he said he would ask the city’s engineers “if they think it’s viable.”
As a solution, the 4th -generation Kolton Resident Brandi Agentin has proposed jurisdictions regulating the Reche canyon to set up a “joint district municipal counseling council” to resolve his concerns about traffic and safety.
The relocation of wild donkeys in the region, a long -time issue in Reche Canyon, was briefly discussed, as Echevaria expressed its appreciation for Kolton’s heads against the background of confusing their relocation and contract status.
In December 2024, San Bernardino County (SBC) partnered with the peaceful rescue of Valley donkeys (PVDR) to save and move wild Burosi to the Arizona and Texas region. However, after saving and moving 256 donkeys, SBC and PVDR agreed to terminate their contract on January 24th.
Finally, the residents expressed concern about the plan for the evacuation of a community fire – especially for the elementary school of the Canyon of Reche. Israel Fuentes, Jr., a member of the Board of the University Quarter of Kolton, said the buses would be escorted by the police and “the children will be out for less than 30 minutes.”
“If you ever have other questions like this, please do not hesitate to contact the school neighborhood and our safety director John Sachs can give you a plan,” Fuentes said.
