Vermont may have been one of the last countries in New England, which are recognized, but Green Mountain State is still home to many historic sites and structures, including libraries, restaurants and schools, from elementary school to college.
In fact, the oldest high school in the country opened more than 200 years ago. Founded in 1819, the Tetford Academy at the Tetford Center still acts as a joint educational high school today, celebrating its two -year day just six years ago in 2019.
Here is the story of the first high school in Vermont.
History of Tetford Academy
According to the school website, the Tetford Academy was first opened in February 1819, with Vermont hiring the school in October of the same year.
The original school was divided into English and classical departments, taught hours in classical languages, mathematics, philosophy, music and painting in order to prepare students for college.
In 1942, the original school building burned, leading to an expansion, including a building of science and welcoming the seventh and eighth -graders. Since then, the campus has continued to expand, now standing in 295 acres with various academic buildings, seven athletic fields and the stage theater.
Today, the Tetford Academy works as an independent high school with about 300 students.
