The Mayor of Birmingham updated the City Council on the recommendations of the Crime Committee – the leader of Alabama news

Birmingham, Ala. – More than half of the recommendations of the Independent Crime Committee in Birmingham are either in the planning, development or approach of the start, said Mayor Randal L. Woodfin during an update from the Birmingham Municipal Council on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. The Commission publishes its Commission A report on January 6, 2025, and Mayor Woodfin is committed to providing status updates throughout the implementation process.

Of the 82 recommendations made by the Commission, 23 are in the planning and development phase, while another 23 are in pre -start or underway.

“In general, I am pleased with the Kadanas we have found to take steps to put these recommendations into practice,” said Mayor Woodfin. “And we remain engaged in our partnerships with the sheriff of Jefferson Mark Pettway, District Prosecutor Carr and our federal partners in Birmingham.”

He added: “I want to acknowledge the support and partnership of the Birmingham Municipal Council, as we are taking more steps to increase public safety and attack of arms violence.”

During the advice of the Council, Mayor Udfin emphasized several actions:

– Up to 90 candidates for the Birmingham Police Department have completed an initial process of screening for the March academy. Fifty to 70 of these candidates are currently being processed, and those who complete the screening phase will join the March class.

– The phase before launching the Birmingham Police Reserve Program is planned for March.

– The recommendation for community violence intervention includes several specific actions in the stage before launch, which are expected to be active in March. This includes the expansion of the hospital intervention, of acute care in the emergency room and the placement of street teams to target at risk and provide opportunities for violation of the violence cycle.

– Numerous departments, including the Birmingham Police Department, Community Safety, Public Works and Planning, Engineering and Permissions Service, focus on hot spots of the Community. This effort is not limited to the police, but also involves removing Blight and applying code. In January, city performers demolished and removed 14 structures, while the public works demolished and removed four additional structures.

– The Commission has made several recommendations related to the cooperation of the Birmingham Police Department with probation and conditional employees. For the coming days, a meeting was planned with command staff of the command of pardon and conditional release.
