The Magic City Classic has an economic impact that stretches across the state – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Reverend Birmingham says an estimated 135,000 people stopped by downtown Birmingham last Saturday. That doesn’t even include employees and people who live there.

Overall, it was the 10th busiest day of the entire year downtown. What makes this so impressive is that Magic city classic it didn’t even happen downtown, but it still had such a big impact.

Rev Birmingham’s Jackson Dean says they are using software to track mobile phone data to see how many people are entering the city centre.

Dean says with so many visits downtown, lodging tax revenue expectations are high because of the large crowds.

Events like this create accommodation taxes, which is a big boom for the whole region. I mean, Birmingham’s accommodation taxes are some of the highest in the country, which means the whole region benefits hugely from that,” Dean said.

He says he hopes the county, state and city will benefit from the MCC, that they all realize how important Birmingham events are.
