The streets of Talahassi remain a dangerous place for pedestrians and cyclists, as victims continue to exist at an alarming rate, despite the slight changes in the number.

There were six pedestrians and two cyclists killed in 2024, according to data obtained from the Talahasi police station at the request of public records.

This is a decrease against last year when 10 pedestrians were killed. But this is another cyclist since 2023.

Each time the population is increasing, the potential for “negative interactions with cars” is increasing, said TPD chief Lawrence Revel.

But the trend that continues to apply is that pedestrians are not yet crossing.

“We have casual ones where drivers leave the road, or do not pay attention, or enter the bicycle lane and hit a motorcycle – these things happen,” Rivel said. “But those we see over and over are where pedestrians just go where they should not go.”

The Sheriff of Leon County Sheriff failed to provide data on crashes, stating that he did not keep records that were monitoring pedestrians or cyclist incidents.

In the last two calendar years, the dashboard of the Florida highways and motor vehicles has reported 12 pedestrians and two cyclists in Leon County, which includes data on a TPD crash, the sheriff office of Leon County and the Florida Highway Patrol.

Based on the dashboard, the numbers for both the death of pedestrians and the cyclist are constantly remaining high in the last five years, showing that the crashes continue to be related.

While the number of cases related to the death of pedestrians TPDs worked last year, the common crashes involving pedestrians increased by 8%by increasing from 172 in 2023 to 186 in 2024. Catastrophes involving cyclists , also increased by approximately 8%, increasing from 65 in 2023 to 70 in 2024.

Subsequently, the number of pedestrian injuries and the cyclist increased by nearly 9%. In 2024, 137 pedestrians were injured in a crash and 126 in 2023. In 2024, 61 cyclists were injured in a crash and 56 in 2023 the injuries were classified as “possible”, “inability” and “incapacity” in Weight, according to the request for records.

Implementing TPD, Road Safety Training

In order to fight death, Revel said TPD was working to encourage drivers to slow down both pedestrians and cyclists to obey the rules of the road. “It’s so important for everyone to work together,” he said. Both the distracted and drunk driving are also still the biggest dangers.

The law enforcement agency manages an aggressive working group for driving and receives grants to direct aggressive driving and training the public under pedestrians rules. Road safety education is just as important as implementation, said Revel.

A person who Jaywalking can be technically canceled, but Revel said that employees usually issue warnings in the hope that this would discourage behavior to happen again.

Many Tallahasese residents complain about the lack of a police presence to monitor speed, red light runners and more. Revel said he assured the public that “we apply the laws to movement every day.”

“This is probably one of the most, if not the most consistent thing not only our officers do on the street, but we also have a movement department (s), that’s all they do,” he added.

“People literally die”

After the death, the relatives of the victims and some local leaders want to do more to protect the most vulnerable road users.

During the city’s annual retreat on January 15, City Commissioner Jack Porter said he was disappointed when he saw that pedestrians, cyclist and road safety were not specifically included in the new five -year plan of the city.

“I want to say that people are literally dying,” said Porter, who is a long -time protector of pedestrians and cyclists. “I don’t know how we leave this from our strategic plan.”

Later that afternoon Greg Sli, the Executive Director of the Transport Planning Agency of the Sofia Region (CRTPA), presented an update to all projects included in the city’s safety plan during the first meeting of the City Commission of the Year.

Slay noted that the city of the city’s rapid actions to reduce speed limitations and design of speed-like velocities, but are longer and flatter-within Pensacal Street and Road St.’s corridors. -Run last year.

Like the improvements to the road in the Campus corridors, CRTPA has many other plans with improvements planned for streets such as Tennessee Street at the Drive Stadium, Monroe Street from John Knox Road to Lakehor Drive and Ayan Church Street Rhode to Monroe Street.

Some of these improvement projects are partially funded by the US Department of Transportation Program. The Biden administration allocated $ 1 billion in Federal funds last year for local municipalities.

In September, Tallahassee received $ 9.6 million from the National Grant Program to finance almost all of its pedestrian and streets projects of Jake Gaither’s employees of the southern city is constantly looking for such gratuitous funds to apply for this year to maintain financing of road safety effort.
