The city of Santa Fe is looking at the acceptance of the technology for Shotspotter – KOB 4

Santa Fe, NM – Santa Fe is the most new city that wants to add new sensors that are reported to be able to find when someone launches a gun.

The same program is already used in Albukerke, and police claim to be successful. Police department says this will not only help them keep people safe, but can also help reduce crime with violence and help employees collect evidence when the shots are fired.

“We need more technology to keep people safe,” said Mayor Alan Webber.

The city of Santa Fe believes that technology is sensors for Shotspotter.

Companies say these sensors are placed on top of buildings or street lamps and can exactly find where a rifle is fired. In minutes, police are notified of the exact location.

“What this technology does is to provide a quick record of a shot that is fired, which is right in location and time. He achieves the police there faster, so they may be able to save lives, “Weber said.

Weber says one of the great advantages of this program is its accuracy when determining whether a gun is actually launched.

The city plans to use a $ 380,000 grant to provide the technology for a annual pilot program. If approved, it will be installed in two different areas where police often respond to crime.

Albuquerque has been using the same exact technology since 2020. In 2024, APD told KOB 4 that rifles in areas where the sensors are located have decreased by 24% compared to the previous year.

“I hope we’re on a quick track to do this,” Weber said.

The mayor says an official plan is expected to be presented to the City Council in the next few weeks. If approved, the first sensors may occur in the next few months.
