Lubbock, Texas — Severe thunderstorms will bring heavy rainfall and a high risk of flash flooding to Lubbock and surrounding areas along I-27 today, with weather conditions likely to worsen through the weekend. Authorities are warning residents to avoid low-lying roads and closely monitor flash flood warnings, as rainfall could exceed two inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lubbock, the storm system is likely to strengthen late tonight and continue into Saturday. There is a 90% chance of rain today and tonight, with the heaviest storms expected to begin after midnight. Thunderstorms will continue into Saturday night, with isolated gusts as high as 20 mph. Localized flooding is possible, especially in areas prone to drainage problems.
The forecast for Saturday calls for high temperatures near 68°F with southerly winds between 10 and 20 mph. The chance of rain remains at 90%, with rainfall potentially reaching two inches. As the storm progresses, areas in Lubbock and nearby cities, including Plainview and Muleshoe, are advised to stay informed through local weather alerts and prepare for possible power outages or road closures due to flooding.
The weather is expected to clear by Sunday, bringing partly sunny skies with a 40% chance of rain early in the day, tapering off overnight. Monday will offer a brief respite with mostly sunny skies and highs near 65°F, though cooler conditions are forecast for the evening, dropping to around 37°F.
Through Tuesday, Lubbock can expect sunny skies with high temperatures reaching 64°F, offering residents a break from the storms. Officials recommend stocking up on emergency supplies and avoiding travel on affected routes this weekend, especially along I-27 where visibility and road conditions could be hazardous.
