Durham Region will conduct its annual nuclear public warning system test on October 29 and 30. The system is designed to alert people in the unlikely event of an accident at the Clarington or Pickering nuclear plants.
The test will take place during the day, within two days:
- included October 29autodialer will call specified landline numbers within 10km of nuclear power stations in Durham Region. Calls will appear to come from 905-666-6291.
- included October 30external sirens will sound for up to one minute. The sirens are within three kilometers of the stations and will be heard by people outdoors in that area as well.

It’s just a test and no action is needed if you get a phone call on Oct. 29 or hear sirens on Oct. 30, the region said.
In a true emergency, after hearing the sirens, you should go indoors and tune into reliable local media or government channels for further instructions. Durham Region is required to test the nuclear public warning system as part of its responsibilities as directed by the Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan (PNERP).
