Residents of a Miami Beach condominium, mostly seniors with frail health, are complaining about a sharp increase in rent in the complex where they live.
The news of the rent increase left them bewildered, as many of them have lived in the co-op for many years. In statements to Telemundo Noticias, the neighbors said they don’t have the money to pay what they’re being asked for, nor do they have the money to move anywhere else.
They are desperate and don’t know what will happen to them next month.
Both buildings are located at 2070 Bay Drive in Miami Beach, facing the bay. All tenants have been notified in writing of the sale of the condominium. Some complain that despite the increase from the new owners, they feel the apartments are not in good condition.
Everyone understands that the new owners have the right to increase the rent, but they want a gesture from them, not month to month.
The previous owner was charging $900 per unit. The new rent came to $1,100.
An attorney representing the new owner said the units will be remodeled and leased to tenants who can afford the price.
He also specified that the average rent in the area is $1,300, with the increase being to adjust the rent to the cost of living in this sector of Miami Beach.
