Tallahasee, Florida (WCTV) – After immigration raids in the capital this week, activists ask city and district MPs to do more to protect immigrants.
But both the city of Talahasi and the Leon County said they could not become a “city of the sanctuary” because of state legislation.
Some commissioners have privately said that they are worried about being removed by governor Ron Ron Zanthis if they support the policies of the city city.
“We are currently stopping people here in America that they can be illegal,” said Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor. “What do they look like? Brown, are they black or something non-white? “
Delila Pierre, president of the Community Action Community Community Community Committee, has joined dozens of others at a recent meeting of the Leon County Commission to summon local officials to return against the federal and state government.
“We, as organizers and activists, are doing the work to build constant pressure to move the needle,” Pierre said. “Because we know that no matter what our district and city committee has the right to use their platforms.”
Talahasi, Leon County are not cities of the sanctuary
According to the US Immigration Council, although there is no standard definition of the sanctuary, they are usually cities that refuse to cooperate with the implementation of immigration.
This may include not notifying immigration and customs implementation (ICE) when a homeless immigrant is in custody, issuing its own ID cards separated from the government of the state, or applying policies that prohibit local authorities from detained on behalf of ice S
Neither the city of Talahassi nor the Leon County are considered to be sanctuary communities.
The staff for both local authorities indicate the Florida Law in 2019, which prevents cities (and districts) from becoming shrines.
However, activists call on both Talahasi and Leon County to adopt a sanctuary -style policies, potentially without the label “Sanctuary City”.
Local law enforcement policy regarding the application of ice
While the Sheriff of Leon County Sheriff does not worship the detainees on ice allowing the suspects to be detained for 48 hours longer so that immigration can take them, the sheriff service will call them to tell them when it will be released Suspect.
“LCSO does not keep individuals off the date of release solely based on ice detention,” said Javoni Hampton, a sheriff spokesman. “However, they notify ICE in advance of the time of release of the individual.”
In other words, LCSO does not keep undocumented immigrants in prison longer than it would be otherwise, but they will signal ice if the agency wants to take them.
“LCSO will also inform ice if a person is marked during a reservation for an active immigration order or signal,” Hampton said.
In addition, the sheriff can collect “Citizenship Information” during a typical investigation. Hampton said the ice will only be warned “Unless a person is reserved in prison or identified during computer search.”
Hampton said the ice would be called during traffic stop if computer search indicated that the suspect was wanted by ice.
While LCSO does not honor the retaining ice, they will have an undocumented immigrant longer than their typical date of exit if ICE submits an order signed by a judge. Many ice warrants are simply administrative, signed by an employee.
“If the order is administrative … (we) we will not keep the individual longer than their release time, but we will notify ICE,” Hampton said.
For Pierre, LCSO policies are unacceptable.
According to the US Immigration Board, prisons may refuse to honor ice retention requests and are not required to comply. However, they note that local authorities cannot physically stop ice to do their jobs.
“I think this is the first step … which makes legal and political research to understand what they (local authorities) can do for undocumented people,” Pierre said. “If it’s economic resources or options … that’s great.”
As they do not control the prison, the Talahasi police department has less interactions with ice. Lieutenant Damon Miller, a spokesman, set out his policy.
“TPD asks the subjects for their identification or biographical information to conduct regular daily investigations,” Miller said.
This could include documents showing that someone is not a citizen or a legal resident. When they check an object against their computer system, they will notify the LEON County Shutter if the topic is searching for ICE.
Miller said TPD usually treats ice detainees as an order.
“The detainees are usually attached to a crime that the person has committed,” Miller said. “It will be treated as an active arrest warrant and the topic will be taken (in prison).”
Pierre claims that commissioners should be less worried about the implementation of sanctuary policies.
“To be honest, at some point, it’s not just about your political career, but about the lives of the people you represent and serve,” Pierre said.
Asked by WCTV about immigration policy after the meeting of the Leon County Commission, only Prector agreed to an interview. All other district commissioners refused an interview or did not answer.
“Well, I have never done anything, only I am personally aware that it is angry with the governor,” Prector said. “But if I did something … He is the governor, he can do everything he wants to do.”
A recent discussion of Tallahassee Ice Raid Sparks
A recent Ice raid tossed the Talahassi and Leon County, applying migrant policies in Overdrive.
Neither the Sheriff’s office of Leon County, nor the Talahassi Police Department, did not participate in the attack. Instead, government agencies have strengthened the application of immigration.
“TPD has not participated in ice raids and is not in any ice workers,” Miller said. “Ice has not made any TPD requests so far.”
Proctor said he wanted to “recognize the humanity of all people.” Standing before the federal court in the city center, he expects additional judges’ decisions about how much ice can be co -captured by local law enforcement agencies.
“When you work under terror, when you work under fear of being confiscated, there is a silence code,” he said.
Immigration policy in schools
The change in federal policy, which allows raids on ice raids in schools, has caused a discussion at the Leon County School Council and the Campuses of the State University of Florida and the University of Florida A&M.
LCS Chief Rocky Hannah said the area would “follow the law”.
“If the agents appear and they have summonses and all the appropriate court documents and things, then we will follow together,” Hannah said.
The Hannah’s spokesman did not answer when asked if the school council plans to look at another immigration policy, as he did in 2017 during the first term of President Donald Trump.
Under this policy, ICE will not have access to students without parental authorization unless ICE has an order or there are no “extraordinary/emergency circumstances”.
According to the website of the district, this policy remains in force.
As for FAMU, a spokesman said the university is in the process of creating a “frequently asked questions” on its website. The spokesman said this page would state how the university interacts with ICE and other federal agencies.
WCTV asked FSU for his ICE interaction policy, but we haven’t heard back so far.
