LARAMIE, Wyo. (11/2/24) – The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team took down Air Force in both the men’s and women’s events on Saturday night. The Cowboys narrowly edged the Falcons in an outright victory, 155-145, while the Cowboys completely dominated Air Force, 196-102.
This contest was the first home game for the Cowboys and was also their first conference matchup of the season. Entering the final two races, the Cowboys and Falcons were tied at 145 apiece, but Andrew Ravegum cruised through the 200-yard IM and Gavin Smith anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay that sealed the win.
Head coach Dave Denniston said: “Our men’s team really showed a lot of character today. I think every single person that hit the water, whether it was off the board or competing in the pool, put everything they had into it every time. I think that’s why we won, especially in the last two events, I told the guys we have to win the last two. Drew took matters into his own hands in the 200 IM and then that 400 free relay was just exciting. You’ve got to love having a senior captain like Gavin anchoring it for you because you know he’s going to put more than what he’s got in him and he did that today.”
It was the second home conference dual for the Cowgirls of the season and they took care of business again. The Cowgirls won 14 of their 16 events and had several second and third place finishes.
“It was great to see the number of women not only winning events, but the number of 2’s and 3’s we got today,” Denniston said. “Taylor Craft had a big breakout day. We just continue to see a lot of good things from our freshman, but Abigail Bruce is someone who is swimming great right now. It’s just fun to see them have fun competing and not have any fear when they get in there.”
The Cowgirls then head across state lines for the Border War against Colorado State on Friday, November 8th at 4:00pm in Fort Collins, Colorado.
